NPR’s Lost and Found slide show of old color photos dating back to the 1930s taken by Charles Cushman is magical. Grade A internet.
This is excellent.
I’m kind of a Snooki fan. Look how tiny’s she’s gotten. She’s lost weight. She’s energetic. Just her spark-plug personality is kind of fun.
It’s raining in NYC. It’s the middle of August. Of course, you need something to do. Well, you can go to one of NYPL’s branches for free programs or to check out books (or you can download an eBook from home). Or you can … sketch a kitten. That’s what this cigarette card from between 1928 and 1934 is supposed to be teaching - how to sketch a kitten. The back of the card - found in the Library’s George Arents Collection - includes barely helpful instructions, such as, “First, it would be advisable to try action sketches before details such as the head; these should be made as quickly as possible, trying to retain in the mind the principle lines suggesting the movement.” Got it? Great. Happy Caturday!
It’s Friday night! Perhaps you have need of a bottle of wine for a nice evening out (or in)? Don’t fret. We at the Discovery News tumblr page have found a way to help you pick. If it looks complicated, that’s because it is.

I particularly enjoy the path that leads to SQN.
Not much beats returning to work and finding a surprise in the form of a book mailed to your office by a favorite friend. Thanks, Miss Audra Chapman!

Philosophers have long struggled to find an explanation for some of life’s most complicated problems. But sometimes, the most profound truths can only be reached through the experience of being a mother.

At last, the wine & food books - both reference & otherwise - are organized in the kitchen. (Mostly. The WSET books are tucked safely nearby at all times.)
Picked this up at the bookstore at ICA in Boston; I suppose it’s stocked in conjunction with the exceptional Os Gemeos exhibit. Brasilian street art is amongst the most exceptional I’ve seen.
